With Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds located just minutes apart, on opposite sides of the Harlem River, shoe leather and subway tokens were all New York City fans needed to get to the big games, when the Yankees met the Giants in the 1951 World Series. Make the Manhattan-Bronx connection, with this pair of 1951 World Series press pins.
The Giants got to the '51 Fall Classic on the strength of Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" homer, that clinched a dramatic three-game special playoff against the Brooklyn Dodgers, after the two NL teams finished the regular season tied for first. Despite a valiant effort in the World Series, the Giants pitchers were no match for the stingy Yankees staff, which yielded just 7 runs total during the Yankees 4 wins. This historic "subway series" saw living legend Joe DiMaggio play in his final World Series, while promising rookies Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle got their first taste of postseason play.
Both of the offered pins are hallmarked on the back by famous maker Dieges & Clust. Formatted with a die cut extension of the classic top hat and bat logo at top, the red, white and blue Yankees pin has a small divot on the blue enamel at the bottom-left corner, forcing a (VG) rating, though otherwise it presents more like EX+ in quality. The Giants pin also has a die cut extension, with the tail of the letter "G" protruding from the round rim at 7 o'clock. Styled tastefully with the Giants logo outlined in gold against a white baseball, this pin shows a pleasing degree of original integrity, to rate as (EX-MT).
